Selling Your Products And Services
All businesses have to start somewhere, whether it is at the kitchen table or in the local coffee shop. It is an exciting time, with endless possibilities. Good planning is the key to making it a success and will give you the confidence to progress matters in a positive way.
In today’s market where competition is fierce and ever-changing, you need to have a clear idea of the target market for your product or service. As the saying goes, you may have spotted a gap in the market, but is there a market in the gap! In conjunction with your other advisors, we can help give you a sanity check on whether your ideas are sound…we have plenty of personal experience to draw upon. We can also point you in the right direction of other advisors who will be able to help you.
Once you have decided what you are selling and who you are selling to, you will need to consider what other barriers may need to be considered before you start making a profit:
- Is there any particular regulatory body governing the provision or sale of your product or service (for instance, the Financial Services Authority or the Gambling Commission)?
- Are there any laws which you should be aware of when setting up and running your business (for instance, the Distance Selling Regulations – which may impact on your pricing model because of the cost of returns)?
- Do you need to be registered for what you plan to do (for instance, are you a Data Controller and require to be registered with the Information Commissioner)?
- What do you need to have in place to make your website, stationary and e-mails compliant with the law?
Getting inspiration from other people and their businesses may be a good starting place, but each business is unique and getting early, good advice can save you from costly re-branding or re-thinking of your business.
